GENERAL LARGE ANIMAL PRACTICE

Dairy and Beef Cows

I have 35 years of experience working on all sizes of dairies.  Currently my practice ranges from family cows to dairies with over 500 cows.  My areas of expertise span reproduction, nutrition, ventilation, mastitis, and heifer rearing. For over 25 years I have utilized an ultrasound to diagnose pregnancy.  I can accurately predict the stage of the heat cycle, which is a value-added reading which blood tests cannot do. In addition to general practice, I also respond to emergencies of all kinds, providing phone consultation or visiting the farm immediately depending on the needs of the situation.

Services: Pregnancy checks, vaccinations, dehorning, consultation on herd management and health, calf health, calving difficulty, mastitis exam and treatment, nutrition, herd evaluation, and testing, wound and disease management, emergencies

Horses

I provide a full array of field services for horses and apply my decades of experience practicing in Vermont to each horse and owner’s needs.  Lameness and sore backs are a special consideration of mine.  Conditions which may not be immediately fixed can be regularly managed to allow the continued enjoyment for both the horse and rider.  I can also use therapeutic cold laser to speed healing of diseased or sore tissue.  With the use of a portable ultrasound, I can reliably breed and diagnose pregnancy or the cause of infertility if breeding is unsuccessful.  Dentistry, which is included in the annual care of a horse, along with balancing the TMJ has long been an area of special interest.

Services: Wellness exams, vaccinations, dentistry, herd management and health, nutrition, health certificates, Coggins forms, lameness exams, breeding and pregnancy diagnosis with an ultrasound, sore backs and issues during riding, wound and disease management, emergencies

Sheep and Goats

Sheep and goats have become an important part of my practice and I provide services for a number of large flocks. How a small ruminant is fed, housed, and milked all directly affects disease issues on that farm. I often consult with large flocks on herd health problems and management and I provide dehorning, parasite control, nutrition, and vaccinations for both large and small flocks. Whatever the issue, I have probably seen it before.

Services: Vaccinations, consultation on flock management and health, kid/lamb health, kidding/lambing difficulty, nutrition, parasite control, flock evaluation, health certificates and testing, dehorning, wound and disease management, emergencies

Pigs and Other Large Animals

I also provide a variety of services for pigs and other large animals. Please contact me to inquire about specific services or for a consultation.

Acupuncture, chiropractic medicine, and cold laser therapy have different uses, which often complement or replace conventional treatments. Whenever I see a patient, I create a tailored treatment using whichever modality, or combination of modalities, will work best. Each case I see is different, as are the needs of the patient and owner.  What works for one animal will not work for the next and my strength is utilizing any or all of these treatment modalities to make for the best treatment possible.

Acupuncture

Chiropractic

I first became interested in acupuncture when my own mother was at the end of her life and I was frustrated that the doctors could do nothing more.  Now I use acupuncture to treat symptoms which are not responding to conventional treatments and I manage hospice care for dogs and cats, making their last days more comfortable.

Traditional Chinese medicine explains that acupuncture works to restore the flow of Qi in the body and is often beneficial in treating pain. One example is the condition of ‘Kissing Spines’ or other back pain where I have found normal and electric acupuncture to be successful in greatly reducing pain in the vertebrae. Another condition where acupuncture can be used to promote and accelerate healing is with non-healing wounds.

Chiropractic work is often used in conjunction with acupuncture and an acupuncture treatment is often even more effective after first adjusting the spine. A common misconception is that chiropractic medicine is about moving bones when, in fact, bones are only stupidly doing what the muscles tell them to do. Therefore, chiropractic treatments involve muscular work and realignment so that both the muscles and bones can operate correctly together. I have been trained in and utilize applied kinesiology during chiropractic treatments, which is a muscle testing approach that enables me to determine the appropriate adjustments.

Cold Laser

Cold laser therapy can be used in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture or stand alone as a successful treatment for a variety of symptoms. Shining the low-level laser onto affected muscles has been shown to stimulate mitochondria within cells, which increases the energy the cells can utilize and stimulates cell regeneration. Because of this, cold laser therapy is effective at treating injuries, sprains, sore muscles, chronic pain, inflammation, wounds, and skin diseases. My latest area of interest is balancing the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems of a patient using cold laser therapy, which can treat behavioral and physical symptoms. The cold laser can also be used to replace needles for acupuncture treatment.
